Electrical Checklist
Use this checklist during the planning and design stages of your new build. Review it with your electrician, builder and architect before construction begins.
1. Early Planning & Design - Engage an electrician as early as possible (ideally during design stage) - Review architectural plans for power, lighting, data and future needs - Confirm switchboard location and capacity - Plan for future solar panels and battery storage (solar-ready cabling) - Plan for future EV charger (location, cable path and switchboard capacity) - Consider generator changeover switch if required - Discuss home automation / smart home requirements - Confirm fibre and networking requirements
2. Power Points & Circuits - Living areas – sufficient power points (including USB outlets) - Kitchen – dedicated circuits for oven, induction/cooktop, dishwasher, rangehood, fridge, microwave, coffee machine, etc. - Kitchen – power points under benches and in pantry - Bedrooms – power points on each wall + USB charging points - Home office – dedicated power and data points - Bathroom – power points for heated towel rails, hair dryers, electric mirrors - Laundry – power for washer, dryer, ironing station - Garage / workshop – high-power circuits and multiple outlets - Outdoor power points (deck, patio, garden) - Spare circuits for future appliances or renovations

Lighting Design - LED downlights throughout - Feature / pendant lighting (dining, kitchen island, entry) - Kitchen task lighting and under-cabinet lighting - Bathroom mirror lighting and vanity lighting - Stair and hallway lighting - Wardrobe and storage lighting - Exterior wall lights - Deck / patio lighting - Garden and pathway lighting - Motion sensor lighting (entry, garage, pathways) - Dimmable lighting zones where desired - Smart lighting compatibility (if required)
4. Data, TV & Networking - Cat6 data cabling to all key rooms (home office, living, bedrooms, media room) - HDMI or multimedia cabling where needed - Wi-Fi access point pre-wiring (ceiling or wall locations) - Structured cabling for security cameras - Cabling for smart home hubs / controllers
5. Smart Home & Automation - Smart lighting wiring / control cabling - Smart switches and dimmers - Automated blinds / curtain motor wiring - Smart heating / cooling control - Energy monitoring capability - Voice control compatibility - Remote access readiness
6. Heating, Cooling & Ventilation - Heat pump wiring (single or multi-split / ducted) - Underfloor heating circuits - Ventilation system wiring (HRV / ERV or extract fans) - Heated towel rail circuits in bathrooms - Zoned heating controls

9. Electric Vehicle & Future-Proofing - EV charger location decided - EV pre-wiring or full charger installation - Correct cable sizing and circuit capacity - Solar-ready cabling to roof / inverter location - Battery storage preparation (if planned) - Spare capacity in switchboard for future loads
10. Kitchen & Bathroom Specifics - Kitchen appliance circuit layout confirmed - Island bench power and data points - Extraction / rangehood circuit - Bathroom exhaust fans - Mirror demisters / heated mirrors - Shaver points or dual USB points
11. Final Stages - Temporary site power arranged (if required) - Rough-in (first fix) completed and inspected - Second fix / fit-off completed - Final testing and certification - Code of Compliance documentation prepared - Owner walkthrough and explanation of systems Extra Tips - Walk through the plans room by room with your electrician. - Think about how you will actually use each space (e.g. charging devices, working from home, entertaining). - Future-proofing during construction is almost always cheaper than retrofitting later. - Keep a copy of the final electrical as-built plans for future reference.
